Those are D Magazine’s covers for just the first half of 2024. Navigating that diversity of content, bringing a sophisticated audience beautiful reader service and compelling journalism—that’s the agony and the ecstasy of designing this award-winning city magazine that is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
The freelance budget isn’t generally big enough to pay for catering on sets, but we did recently send our staff photographer and an editor to Botswana for a once-in-a-lifetime story about a Dallas art framer who started an elephant orphanage. (Check it out on our website—it is pretty cool.)

Responsibilities :
- Design covers, features, shorter FOB pages
- Attend and direct photo shoots
- Assign and art direct photography and illustration to freelance artists;
project manage these assignments; communicate deadlines and revisions
to freelancers to receive art in timely manner - Process freelance invoices
- Conduct image research
- Collaborate on occasion with art directors at D Home and D CEO
- Supervise an assistant art director.
- Styling experience a plus
- Pitching story ideas a plus
Requirements and qualifications :
- Mastery of all the Adobe stuff
- Minimum five years relevant experience in publishing
